The Ma’o hau hele that is also known as the Hibiscus brackenridgei, is Hawaii’s State flower. The tree that houses this beautiful flower can grow up to 10 meters tall. This flower is native to dry forest and shrub lands and grows at elevations from 400 to 2600 feet. It is found on all significant Hawaiian islands, except Ni’ihau and Kaho’olawe. Much to the dismay of flower lovers, this flower is listed as an endangered species.

Go Shopping, Solo: If you have been dying to buy something important that takes a lot of research and testing (a new TV, a watch, a bike) make this the day you accomplish your goal. It’s hard to feel bad about going solo when you are able to do things that make you happy — and remind you that you love life.

Perform a random act of kindness: Express your love for life by doing something unexpected and kind for someone else. Imagine a whole day of such small, heartfelt moments when you do something meaningful for someone who you hardly know or don’t know at all. You’ll feel ridiculously good afterwards.

Adopt a pet: If you have the emotional capacity to care and love an animal and a lifestyle that can support it, adoption will give you a great way to celebrate attachment. Granted, you can’t repeat this every year, however, a new pet could work wonders for you this February 14th. You could also help rehabilitate an abused or neglected shelter animal.

Love Yourself: Love the one closest to you, yourself! Girlfriends/Boyfriends, friends, and even family may come and go, but you will always have you. So don’t forget to spoil and treat yourself to something special. Indulge in a guilty pleasure with absolutely no apologies. Sing off-key to your favorite song. Make it a chocolate affair if you’d like to max yourself out on pure decadence for awhile. Curl up with a cup of coffee and that book you’ve been dying to read for the past few months. Lose yourself in a relaxing massage at the spa. Whatever your heart desires, be your own best Valentine.
