EASTER- A TIME TO CELEBRATE NEW BEGINNINGS & THE RENEWAL OF SPIRIT

Join us on :  facebook 16pinterest_icon_16x32Flora200o - Twittergplus-16x16

Easter is the time to celebrate new beginnings, the renewal of spirit and for the Easter bunny and Easter eggs to make an appearance.  The festival of Easter is celebrated to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ after crucifixion and is one of the holiest Christian festivals. The Easter Day also traditionally heralds the advent of the spring season after the gloomy months of winter. As such Easter festival is associated with joyous merriment and gaiety.

Origin of Easter

Like many other Christian festivals, Easter has also emerged from ancient pagan roots. It is an amalgamation of a myriad of Pagan, Hebrew and Christian traditions. Easter incorporates pagan symbols of fertility in the shape of the Easter bunny and Easter eggs. The name of the festival, Easter, itself may be an offshoot of Eostre, the pagan Goddess of spring.

Easter celebrations across the world

Dyed eggs were shared and eaten at spring festivals in ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Persia and China. Gradually these traditions made their way westward and were expressed in various forms – from dyed goose eggs to beautifully decorated paper mâché eggs in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the late 19th and early 20th century the ultimate Easter eggs – the Fabergé eggs made their royal appearance.

Easter Eggs

Easter celebration has always been synonymous with merry-making and enjoyment. Because of this aspect, the recent years have witnessed increasing commercialization of the Christian Easter festival. Today during Easter holidays, sale of greeting cards and confectionery such as chocolate Easter eggs, marshmallow bunnies, Peeps, and jelly beans prove to be big hits.

The Origin of Chocolate Easter Eggs

Chocolate Easter eggs come from Europe. Today’s tradition of giving chocolate Easter eggs as gifts can be traced back to 19th century France and Germany. The first eggs were small and solid and made of bitter dark chocolate. As technology improved and cocoa became more widely available, so did chocolate Easter eggs. The tradition spread other parts of the world, often with each country making their own unique mark.

Easter Chocolate Eggs
The first mass-produced chocolate egg appeared in England in 1873 when Cadbury debuted their first Easter egg. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that milk chocolate Easter eggs became available. Today’s Easter eggs are available in dizzying variety – from those found on supermarket shelves to the top quality uber-thick chocolate works of art, beautifully decorated and filled with chocolate surprises from specialty chocolatiers.

Sending Easter wishes

People the world over celebrate the true spirit of Easter Sunday by sending enticing Easter gifts, enchanting ensembles and delectable chocolates to near and dear ones. There are plenty of options to choose from as gifts are specially crafted keeping in mind this spirited holiday. So this Easter Sunday, don’t miss out on sending your loved ones Easter gifts, Easter flowers, Easter Hampers or delectable Easter chocolate eggs.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY- A DAY TO WISH YOUR LOVED ONES GOOD LUCK & CHEER

St Patrick’s Day is celebrated not just by the Irish but by people the world over to commemorate the patron saint of Ireland. It’s the perfect time to spread cheer and wish your loved ones the best of everything. Sending St. Patrick’s Day gifts and St. Patrick’s Day flowers to near and dear ones both in Ireland and around the world reinforces the links and roots which have survived through many generations.

Traditions and symbols

Around the world, the color green is associated with St. Patrick’s Day. However, originally the color for this day was blue. Over a period of time, green became the preferred choice and people began wearing green ribbons, the Blarney stone, shamrocks and designs based on the shamrock as symbols. The shamrock came to be important to the Irish because St. Patrick is said to have used this three-leaved clover plant to explain the concept of the Holy Trinity. But finding a four-leaved shamrock is considered lucky especially on this day. St. Patrick’s Day can’t be complete without the mention of the mythical leprechaun. It is famously believed that catching one on this day could lead you to a pot of gold!

Celebrations across the World

St. Patrick’s Day became the official public holiday of Ireland in 1903. But it wasn’t till the mid-1990s that the Irish government began a campaign to showcase this festival. Many towns, cities, and villages in Ireland hold parades and festivals. Along with Dublin one of the biggest celebrations takes place in the town of Downpatrick where Saint Patrick is believed to have been buried. The festivities are a week long and marked by floats, concerts, sports events and pub hopping. In many cities across the globe green clothing is traditionally worn, and American cities like Chicago and Savannah dye their waterways green. In fact people participating in the New Orleans parades are known for throwing onions, carrots, cabbages, potatoes and other ingredients that make up the traditional Irish stew.

HAPPY MOTHERING SUNDAY

In the UK, Mother’s Day is traditionally referred to as Mothering Sunday. Mothering Sunday has been celebrated for many centuries and is part of the Christian tradition. This day always falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

UK Mother's Day

Ideally one doesn’t need reasons for celebrating Mother’s Day and appreciating one’s mother and showering her with gifts. However, there is quite a history behind the origin of ‘UK Mother’s Day’ and as this day draws near, the time seems perfect to know that how this day came to be known as ‘Mothering Sunday’.

Like the rest of Europe, England and Ireland observed the mid-Lent holiday and honored and decorated their “Mother Church,” the church where they were baptized. The church eventually extended the observation to honor all mothers. The English called this Mothering Sunday and, in the 1700’s they observed it by taking a break from the fasting and penitence of Lent and having a family feast.

Children would make a rare journey home from their apprenticeships and jobs to spend the day with their mother and family. Mothering Sunday fell out of practice in the early 1900’s. After WWII, however, the islanders once again picked up the tradition, inspired largely by the United States. Today UK Mother’s Day continues in much the same way as the old tradition, with cards and dinners in honor of Mothers.

In addition, cakes and flowers — especially violets — are given to Moms on Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom. It is customary to serve Simnel Cake, a glazed fruitcake inspired by a folk tale about a married couple, Simon and Nell. This pair could not decide whether to bake or broil a cake, so in the end they ended up doing both. Thus Simnel Cake was born.

From gift ideas and picturesque places to visit with your mom to the perfect flowers for the occasion, there are many ways in which you can show your mom your affection, gratitude and love and make Mother’s Day special. Celebrate your special bond with your mom this Mother’s Sunday with delectable hampers, enticing cakes or stunning ensembles that have been crafted specially with love and a whole lot of warmth. This year in 2013, UK Mother’s Day will be celebrated on 10th March whereas in 2014 it will be celebrated on 30th March.

DAFFODIL-THE MAGNIFICENT MARCH BIRTH FLOWER

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o’er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

–          William Wordsworth

Daffodil_Days_1600

Origins

The daffodil which is commonly referred to as narcissus with large trumpets is the March birth flower. For thousands of years, daffodils have been a potent symbol in both Eastern and Western cultures. Although it’s most recognizable meaning is rooted in Greek mythology, it also has very specific and varied meanings for different cultures, both past and present. Today, this flower is used all over the world in ceremonies, on holidays and at festivals, and as a fundraising symbol for various charities.

Charities

Many of the cancer charity organizations sell daffodils on Daffodil Day, which is typically in March. Along the lines of the Christian representation of death and rebirth, many Cancer charities have used the narcissus as a symbol of rebirth and hope. The American, Canadian, New Zealand and Irish Cancer Societies, as well as Muriel Curie Cancer Care have taken on the narcissus, or daffodil, as their organization’s symbol.

Chinese New Year

The daffodil flower arrived in China around 1000 A.D. during the Song Dynasty. For the Chinese, the flower became a symbol of good fortune and wealth as it blooms during the Chinese New Year. It is common in China to “carve” daffodil bulbs so that as they bloom, they grow into different shapes and sizes resembling peacocks and crabs.

Gifting Daffodils

Daffodils signify respect, regard and unrequited love. The daffodil is one of the first flowers of spring; therefore it is a symbol of rebirth. If you are looking to gift your loved ones something rejuvenating and spirited then send them a bouquet of daffodils on the many holidays that fall throughout the month of March such as St. David’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, UK Mother’s Day and Easter. The daffodil is the emblem of Wales and is worn on St David’s Day. Beautifully bundled together daffodils make for lovely gifts no matter what the occasion.

The Significance of Flowers during the Chinese Spring Festival

Chinese Spring Festival, also called Lunar New Year, has more than 4,000 years of history. Being one of the traditional Chinese festivals, it is the grandest and the most important festival for Chinese people. It is also the time for the whole families to get together, which is similar with Christmas Day in the west. Originating during the Shang Dynasty (about 17th – 11th century BC), Spring Festival, which celebrates family reunion, is full of rich and colorful activities, and new hopes with the advent of spring and flowers blossoming. People from different regions and different ethnic groups celebrate it in their unique ways.

Chinese Festival

Visiting traditional flower markets is a must in the week prior to Chinese New Year. Flowers, traditional Chinese New Year snacks, decorations like chun lianand other items are for sale. These markets are where Chinese stock up on flowers, orange trees, snacks, and decorations for Chinese New Year.

 Spring festival

In Hong Kong, children who are doing poorly in school are taken to walk around the flower market. Through the practice of Mai Lan, it is believed the children will no longer be lazy and work harder in the New Year. Flowers are bought to not only decorate the home but to help unmarried people find lovers or welcome prosperity in the New Year.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR-GIFT YOUR BELOVED SOMETHING BEWITCHING THIS VALENTINE’S DAY

Fragrances are one of the most popular online Valentine’s gifts to send across to your chosen one on Valentine’s Day. Wearing something so intimate gives a sign of affection and a deep bond. Suiting the personality- perfumes are one of the most romantic and passionate Valentine’s gifts. At the same time, it is important to gift the right perfume and fragrance that suits the personality of the receiver. So make sure you know exactly what your valentine’s taste is when it comes to perfumes.

Spray-Him-with-Love

Gifting high end fragrances has been an age old custom and receiving and sending perfumes has been a big hit with both men and women through the ages and across the globe.

To get an idea of how powerful fragrance can be, look no further than Empress Josephine, who, legend has it, doused her rooms in her signature musk after Napoleon decided to leave her for the Archduchess of Austria. A note with serious staying power, it lingered long after Josephine departed the premises, ensuring that her ex would be reminded of her every time he stepped foot into her abandoned chambers. That such a tale originates in France should come as no surprise, since, perfumes are as much a part of the French culture as food and wine.

The French have never been afraid of their dark, spicy statement scents but as you move across southern Europe, Mediterranean freshness takes over. Citrus and neroli are typical of the region, which has historically served as a melting pot—the early days of Eastern spice traders and exotic travelers left a permanent mark on the fragrance culture.

In the Middle East, fragrance is so ingrained in the culture as the Persians were the first to use distillation to extract oils from flowers—that residents rarely go a day without it. Many women wear strong perfume all over as a way to symbolize arrival. Where smoldering incense and fragrant teas are omnipresent, strong wood notes are popular—earthy vetiver, sensual oud—and there’s a love of layering. Women normally apply a strong, woodsy base, then layer flowery European perfumes on top. The technique is prevalent in India, too, where base notes like sandalwood and patchouli, used for centuries in religious and beautifying ceremonies, are mixed with sensual floral notes like jasmine.

China, with its many different regions, has varied tastes that tend to correlate with the climate. Woody notes do better in dry Beijing, and fruity florals thrive in warmer Shanghai. People in the hot, humid southern areas prefer refreshing but pungent fragrances. That’s in stark contrast to the Japanese, a more reserved society that eschews the heavy scents of other cultures and prefers delicate, well-balanced fragrances.

European Perfumes

Americans, known for their insatiable appetites love gourmand notes like vanilla and sweet, fruity notes like strawberry. And although fresh, “clean” scents are also typically American, the most popular fragrances in the U.S.A have traditionally been feminine florals. This is no doubt left over from their shared history with the British, who are known for, and still enjoy, English-garden floral notes of rose, lily of the valley, and violet.

The world is getting smaller and the door to experimenting with different fragrances is wide open. So this Valentine’s if you are looking to gift your beloved something truly unique and distinct then along with sending her Valentine’s Roses surprise her with a bottle of her favorite fragrance. No matter which part of the world you are in, you can easily send across perfumes and Valentine’s Day flowers along with heartfelt wishes through online gifting, and make your sweetheart feel extremely special.

DISTANCE MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDERS

It is said that distance makes the heart grow fonder. This is probably the reason why lovers who are apart spend most of their time thinking about each other. Long distance love and relationships are a part of everyday life for millions of couples across the globe.

Technological developments such as WhatsApp, Skype and Face-Time have made it more convenient and affordable for lovers to maintain long distance relationships without racking up long distance phone call charges on their monthly bill.

But when it comes to long distance relationships that span across continents and thousands of miles, planning regular visits to meet your special someone can be financially taxing.

In such a situation the best way to show your significant other that he/she is always in your thoughts is to send them heartwarming and thoughtful gifts. Since relationships are primarily driven by emotion, a thoughtful gift can truly touch the heart of your beloved and show them that although they might be out of sight, they are most definitely not out of your mind.

With Valentine’s Day just round the corner everywhere you look, love is in the air. It’s that time of the year again, the time to profess your love for your sweetheart and make your chosen one feel extremely special by bestowing them with heart-stirring gifts. The element of surprise is often underestimated by couples who have known each other for too long. Whether it is a surprise visit or a surprise gift in the mailbox, it shows your partner that you are constantly thinking about them, and in return will make them think of you. So don’t forget to book the perfect gift for your beloved who might be far away this Valentine’s Day and take them by complete surprise.

A good Valentine’s Day gifting idea is to send your sweetheart a box of individually wrapped chocolates. Each chocolate can be reminder for each day till you see each other next. You can also shower your beloved with multiple gifts such as Soft Toys, Spa Hampers, bewitching Perfumes, Valentine’s Day Roses and more. You can get the multiple gifts wrapped together and delivered as one big package.

VIOLET – THE FIVE PETAL VELVETY BLOSSOM

I know a bank whereon the wild thyme blows
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses, and with eglantine:

-Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare

Also known as the African Violet, February’s birth flower is the Violet. This beautiful flower is a five-petal velvety blossom that comes in shades of pinks, whites and purples. They also exist as bi-colored flowers, often blue and yellow. Violets have a unique method of reproduction, known as cleistogamy, which means to self-pollinate and are available as a houseplant or garden plant all year round. Baron Walter Von Saint Paul-Illaire is credited with discovering the violet plant in Tanzania in 1892.

Scientific name: Viola odorata
Family: Violaceae

Violets have an interesting history, and the meaning of this flower has evolved with time. Greek legend tells of a nymph named lo, who was beloved by Zeus. To hide her from Hera, his wife, Zeus changed lo into a white cow. When she wept over the taste and texture of the coarse grass, Zeus changed her tears into dainty, sweet smelling violets that only she was permitted to eat.

During the Middle Ages, violets were a symbol for humility and modesty not only because of the blooming habits of the flower but also because of their association with the Virgin Mary. Back in the Victorian era, a Violet flower would symbolize complete faithfulness and a cream Violet would stand as a symbol to take a chance.

Empress Josephine Bonaparte, the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte loved the scent of violets and thus they became her favorite perfume.  Before Napoleon was exiled in Elba, Josephine died and he picked a bouquet of violets for her grave. When Napoleon died, violets and a lock of Josephine’s hair were found in a locket that he wore.

Violet has a major significance in February, the month of love and romance as it is commonly exchanged on Valentine’s Day amongst lovers along with Valentine’s Day roses. It is also gifted on special occasions such as weddings, engagements and birthdays. If you are looking to send flowers online on Valentine’s Day then send your beloved a bouquet of beautifully bundled violets. Send Valentine’s Day flowers to your loved one and let them know how truly special they are. Violets are a perfect symbol of constancy or devotion and hence make for the perfect Valentine’s Day gift.
